Course background and purpose<\/strong><\/div>\n
The course aims to discuss two methods in the field of discourse<\/div>\n
studies: Discourse-theoretical analysis (DTA) and Discursive-material<\/div>\n
analysis (DMA). Both are grounded in so-called high theory, with<\/div>\n
discourse theory as its main starting point, but with elements of actor<\/div>\n
network theory and new materialism. This course will start with an<\/div>\n
introduction to these theoretical models, but will then move on to their<\/div>\n
analytical deployment in communication and media studies research.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Special attention will be spent on the creation of a theory-grounded<\/div>\n
analytical model to guide the research. Apart from attending lectures,<\/div>\n
participants will be expected to participate in both theoretical and<\/div>\n
research-driven workshops.<\/div>\n

Learning outcomes<\/strong><\/div>\n
On completion of this unit successful students will be able to:<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
– have a deeper understanding of the field of discourse studies, and in<\/div>\n
particular of its discourse-theoretical component<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
– have a deeper understanding of the theoretical relationship between the<\/div>\n
discursive and the material<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
– know how to translate discourse-theoretical\u00a0models into analytical practice, through the use of the notion of the\u00a0sensitizing concept (applied to discourse theory, and to<\/div>\n
discourse-theoretical rereading of other theories)<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
– be able to set up an\u00a0analytical model for a discourse-theoretical analysis and a\u00a0discursive-material analysis<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Teaching and evaluation\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n
The one-week course will be organised in 10 teaching slots, combining<\/div>\n
lectures and workshops. These workshops are partially theoretical<\/div>\n
(presenting an article or chapter), and partially research-driven\u00a0(presenting an analytical model).<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The grade Pass or Fail is given after 1) attendance of minimally 8<\/div>\n
meetings, 2) a working group theoretical presentation, 3) an individual<\/div>\n
case study presentation.<\/div>\n

Available participant slots and costs<\/strong><\/div>\n
A total number of 20 participant slots are available. 40% of these are<\/div>\n
earmarked for Uppsala University PhD researchers. Participation is free<\/div>\n
of charge, but participants are required to pay themselves for their<\/div>\n
travel and accommodation costs, and all other expenses.<\/div>\n

and Method PhD course (available when registration is open).<\/div>\n
Registration opens on 9 October 2017 and will close on 15 January 2018,<\/div>\n
