PhD student Position in Media and Communication Studies at Malm\u00f6 University<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

General information about Malm\u00f6 University
\n<\/span><\/span><\/b>Since its inception in 1998, Malm\u00f6 University has grown into the country’s eighth largest institution of higher education with 25 000 students. Its education and research programmes are distinguished by their multidisciplinary, problem-oriented approach and social relevance. The university offers students a range of educations in five faculties: Culture and Society, Education and Society, Health and Society, Odontology, and Technology and Society.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Faculty of Culture and Society
\n<\/span><\/span><\/b>The Faculty of Culture and Society is a multidisciplinary faculty that includes the School of Arts and Communication (K3), the Department of Global Political Studies, the Department of Language and Linguistics, and the Department of Urban Studies.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

School of Arts and Communication (K3)
\n<\/span><\/span><\/b>K3 is a multidisciplinary school with approximately 80 employees and 1000 full-time students. The school’s education and research deal with media, design, art, culture and society and it plays an important role in the \u00d6resund region’s cultural life. K3 conducts transnational education at the bachelor’s and master’s level as well as PhD programmes within the research area New Media, Public Spheres and Forms of Expression.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span><\/b>The PhD programme prepares the candidate for a research or teaching career in academia as well as provides professional skills for work outside the academic field. Aims of the Media and Communication programme include: the experience of collaboration with other researchers, critical and scholarly engagement with both traditional and\/or contemporary discourses in the field of Media and Communication, and establishing a national and international contact network. Further, it is desirable that the student integrates creative or practical work with analytical work<\/span> <\/span>.<\/span> Currently there are approximately 10 active PhD students in the research area.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Employment as a PhD student<\/span> <\/span><\/b>
\nAn employed PhD student shall primarily devote time to his\/her own research training. Decisions regarding employment of PhD students can be found in Higher Education Ordinance 5 Chap. 1-7 \u00a7\u00a7. The PhD student is expected to actively participate in the research and teaching environment.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The aim of the PhD programme is to develop the knowledge and skills required for the PhD student to independently conduct research and thereby contribute to the development of knowledge within the project. The PhD programme is worth 240 higher education credits (equivalent to four years of full-time studies).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Eligibility requirements<\/span> <\/span><\/b>
\nThe general requirements for third-cycle (PhD) education are that the student has
\n1) received a second-cycle higher education degree,
\n2) completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are second-cycle, or
\n3) in some other way, nationally or internationally, acquired equivalent knowledge.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Special requirements for the position are knowledge and skills corresponding to<\/span> a second-cycle degree (master) in media and communication studies or in another subject that is relevant to media and communication studies (such as communication for development)<\/span> .<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Special requirements can also be fulfilled by demonstrating equivalent knowledge that has been acquired in some other way, nationally or internationally.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span><\/b>Initial assessment concerns<\/span> the general and specific eligibility requirements<\/span> (above).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Further, according to Higher Education Ordinance 5 Chap. 5 \u00a7, importance is placed on<\/span> the student’s ability to appropriate the advanced learning<\/span> of the third-cycle PhD programme. The previously written material and the dissertation plan are important indicators of this ability. (Refer to instructions on the form of the application, below.)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Another important basis of assessment is<\/span> the degree to which the proposed research direction aligns<\/span> with the research area of New Media, Public Spheres and Forms of Expression and with the academic field of Media and Communication Studies.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Additional assessment criteria include<\/span> demonstrated analytical and communication skills<\/span> , and<\/span> demonstrated fluency in written and spoken English<\/span> .<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
