No. SU FV-0547-16<br \/>\nApplication Deadline: 15 April 2016.<\/p>\n<p>With roughly 100 employees (of which 31 are PhD students) and 900<br \/>\nfull-time students, the Department of Media Studies is one of the larger<br \/>\ndepartments within the Faculty of Humanities. The department has four<br \/>\nundergraduate and graduate subject areas: Film Studies, Journalism,<br \/>\nMedia &amp; Communication Studies and Fashion Studies. These are divided<br \/>\ninto three divisions: Film, Journalism, Media &amp; Communications (JMK) and<br \/>\nFashion. For more information about areas of research see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ims.su.se\/\" target=\"_blank\">www.ims.su.se<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One of the doctoral positions will be linked to the \u201dGlobal Media<br \/>\nStudies and the Politics of Mediated Communication\u201d research environment<br \/>\n(see description below). Applicants who wish to be considered in<br \/>\nrelation to this environment should indicate their interest in their<br \/>\npersonal letters.<\/p>\n<p>Project description<br \/>\nIn 2014, JMK was designated by the Faculty of Humanities at Stockholm<br \/>\nUniversity as a leading research environment within the area of \u201dGlobal<br \/>\nMedia Studies and the Politics of Mediated Communication.\u201d The area is<br \/>\ninterdisciplinary, and a variety of theoretical perspectives are<br \/>\ncombined with methodological innovation. A primary area of interest is<br \/>\ncontemporary flows of, for example, citizens and media (at the local and<br \/>\nglobal levels). In addition to political and cultural analyses of the<br \/>\nglobalization of media and transnational media institutions, research on<br \/>\ncosmopolitanism, war and conflict, identity and politics, global \u201cmedia<br \/>\nevents,\u201d media witnessing, cultural diversity and media consumption are<br \/>\nrepresented within the area. Another area of research that for which JMK<br \/>\nis known is that of the social role of the news media \u2013 particularly in<br \/>\nrelation to class, gender, ethnicity and age. These research projects<br \/>\ninclude studies of\/on power relations, the practice of news reporting,<br \/>\nidentity and social movements, political extremism, political<br \/>\ncommunication, journalism and PR, gender and diversity in news, and the<br \/>\nrole of the media in both historical and contemporary conflict.<\/p>\n<p>Qualification requirements<br \/>\nIn order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have<br \/>\ncompleted a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at<br \/>\nleast 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the<br \/>\nsecond cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden<br \/>\nor elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>In order to meet the specific entry requirements, the general syllabus<br \/>\nfor doctoral studies in the field of journalism stipulates that<br \/>\napplicants must have received a passing grade on course work of at least<br \/>\n30 higher education credits from the second cycle in journalism,<br \/>\nincluding a degree project of at least 15 credits. The entry<br \/>\nrequirements can also be met by students who have acquired equivalent<br \/>\nknowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Only a person who will be or has already been admitted to a third-cycle<br \/>\nprogramme may be appointed to a doctoral studentship. The primary<br \/>\nassessment criteria in appointing a doctoral student should be the<br \/>\ncapacity to benefit from the training.<\/p>\n<p>Selection<br \/>\nThe selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their<br \/>\ncapacity to benefit from the training. The following criteria will be<br \/>\nused to assess this capacity: the candidates\u2019 documented knowledge in a<br \/>\nrelevant field of research, written and oral proficiency in both Swedish<br \/>\nand English, the capacity for analytical thinking, the ability to<br \/>\ncollaborate, as well as creativity, initiative, and independence. The<br \/>\nassessment will be based on previous experience and grades, the quality<br \/>\nof the degree project, references, relevant experience, interviews, and<br \/>\nthe candidate\u2019s written motivation for seeking the position.<\/p>\n<p>Local admission regulations for doctoral studies in journalism and<br \/>\nsyllabus are available at:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ims.su.se\/forskning\/utbildning-p\" target=\"_blank\">www.ims.su.se\/forskning\/utbildning-p <\/a>-forskarniv\u00e5.<\/p>\n<p>Admission Regulations for Doctoral Studies at Stockholm University are<br \/>\navailable at: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.regelboken.su.se\/\" target=\"_blank\">www.regelboken.su.se<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Terms of employment<br \/>\nThe term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment<br \/>\nmay be extended for a maximum of two years at a time.
